ELECTRONICS FACTORY ESD WORKWEAR: WHAT BUYERS SHOULD CHECK

Table of Content [Hide]

In electronics manufacturing, a static discharge that a worker cannot even feel may still be a problem for sensitive components.

That is why ESD workwear should not be purchased simply as another factory uniform.

ESD Control Is About the System

Workers naturally generate electrical charge through movement and contact with different materials.

ESD garments are designed to help manage that charge, commonly using fabrics containing conductive fibers. However, clothing is only one part of an ESD control program.

Footwear, flooring, grounding, workstations and operating procedures may also affect overall performance.

This is an important distinction because industrial anti-static clothing designed for ignition hazards and ESD garments used to protect electronic devices are not necessarily specified in the same way.

Choose the Fabric Around the Process

Polyester fabrics incorporating conductive yarns are commonly considered for electronics and controlled manufacturing environments. DOMEX's existing anti-static range also includes conductive-fiber fabric solutions.

But fabric composition alone does not tell the full story.

Buyers should consider the required electrical performance, washing method, garment life and whether the production area also has cleanroom requirements.

    Small Design Details Matter

An ESD coat or coverall should maintain appropriate coverage during normal movement. Garment closures, cuffs, pockets and conductive material distribution can all influence how practical the garment is on the production line.

For electronics factories running multiple departments, it may also make sense to use different garment configurations for assembly, testing and controlled production areas rather than forcing one uniform specification across the entire plant.

Don't Buy ESD Clothing by Appearance

Two garments can look almost identical while using completely different fabrics.

For procurement teams, the useful information is the fabric specification, relevant test results, washing conditions and required ESD performance—not simply whether a black conductive grid is visible on the cloth.

    Conclusion

Electronics workwear should be selected around the ESD control requirements of the production process.

A clear technical specification helps the manufacturer match the fabric and garment construction to the actual environment while avoiding unnecessary cost.
