MARINE AND SHIPYARD PROTECTIVE WORKWEAR: FR, WELDING AND WEATHER PROTECTION

Table of Content [Hide]

Shipyards are difficult environments to cover with a single type of workwear.

A welder working inside a vessel, a maintenance technician on deck and a worker handling equipment outdoors may face completely different hazards—even on the same project.

That makes job-based PPE selection especially important.

    Welding and Hot Work

Shipbuilding and repair involve extensive welding, cutting and grinding.

Workers performing hot work may be exposed to sparks, heat and molten metal particles. Clothing for these tasks should be selected according to the welding process and risk assessment rather than using ordinary cotton workwear simply because it feels heavy.

Where flame-resistant protection is specified, garment construction also needs attention. Exposed openings and unsuitable components can undermine an otherwise appropriate fabric.

    Visibility Around Equipment

Shipyards also contain cranes, forklifts, transport vehicles and large structures that can restrict visibility.

Reflective or enhanced-visibility workwear can therefore be useful for workers operating around vehicle routes, docks and low-light areas.

DOMEX already manufactures FR/AR garments with enhanced-visibility configurations, allowing visibility features to be combined with thermal protection where the project requires both.

    Outdoor Work Means Weather Matters

Marine environments add wind, rain and moisture to the equation.

Outerwear should therefore be selected separately from hot-work clothing where necessary. Waterproofing, breathability, seam construction and layering become particularly important for workers spending long periods outdoors.

Trying to make one garment perform every function can result in clothing that is unnecessarily heavy and uncomfortable.

Specify PPE by Job, Not Just Industry

A better shipyard PPE specification separates workers by task: welding and cutting, electrical maintenance, general fabrication, outdoor deck work and logistics.

Each group can then receive the level of FR, arc, visibility or weather protection actually required.

This approach can also make procurement more economical because high-performance PPE is allocated where the hazard justifies it.

    Conclusion

There is no universal “shipyard coverall.”

Effective marine workwear starts with understanding the job being performed and then matching the garment to the relevant thermal, visibility and weather hazards.
