When it comes to arc flash protective clothing, proper maintenance is just as important as design and certification. Industrial laundering—common in oil & gas, utilities, and manufacturing—can extend or destroy the life of your FR garments depending on how it’s done.
Repeated industrial washing uses high alkalinity, heat, and mechanical action. While this effectively removes contaminants, overly aggressive wash cycles can weaken flame-resistant fibers, reduce tensile strength, and compromise surface finishes that help garments resist ignition.
Arc-rated (AR) garments are tested under standards like ASTM F1506 and EN ISO 11612, assuming correct maintenance. Improper detergents or excessive chlorine can strip the FR treatment, reducing protection against flash fire or electric arc. Always ensure laundering partners follow ISO 15797 or manufacturer instructions to retain compliance.
Even the best fabrics degrade over time. After around 50 industrial wash cycles, inspect garments for thinning, discoloration, or stiffness. Replace any clothing showing visible wear, loss of labeling, or reduced protection ratings.
Use neutral-pH detergents with no bleach or fabric softener
Dry at low to medium heat to prevent shrinkage
Store garments clean and dry
Re-test arc protection periodically for heavy-duty users
