HOW TO TRAIN WORKERS TO WEAR ARC FLASH PPE CORRECTLY

Table of Content [Hide]

Even the best arc flash PPE is ineffective if workers don’t wear it properly. Proper training is essential to ensure every employee understands how to use, maintain, and trust their protective gear. Here’s how safety managers can build a practical, effective PPE training program.

    START WITH HAZARD AWARENESS

Before focusing on garments, workers must understand why arc flash PPE matters.

Explain the dangers of electrical arcs, how quickly temperatures can exceed 19,000°C, and how compliant PPE minimizes injury risk. Connecting protection to real hazards builds respect for safety standards like NFPA 70E and EN ISO 11612.

    TEACH LABEL RECOGNITION

Every worker should know how to read a PPE label.

    Cover key elements such as:

    • ATPV or EBT values (cal/cm²)

    • Category rating (CAT 1–4)

    • Standards: NFPA 70E, ASTM F1506, EN ISO 11612, EN 1149-5

This ensures they always select the right garment for the job’s energy exposure level.

    DEMONSTRATE PROPER WEAR AND FIT

Arc flash clothing must be fully fastened and properly layered.

    Train workers to:

    • Keep shirts tucked in and sleeves down

    • Avoid rolling cuffs or unzipping coveralls

    • Never wear synthetic underlayers that can melt under heat

Hands-on demonstrations help reinforce correct behavior.

    COVER MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

Teach workers how to inspect garments for holes, fading, or contamination before every use.

Emphasize washing guidelines—no bleach, no fabric softener, and washing at ≤ 60 °C.

Replace any garment that’s worn, damaged, or label-faded after 50+ industrial wash cycles.

    REINFORCE THROUGH REGULAR TRAINING

Periodic refresher courses keep compliance high.

Simulate real scenarios, update teams on standard changes, and include spot checks to ensure ongoing correct use of PPE.
