Electrical hazards remain one of the most serious risks in industrial workplaces. To protect workers, the NFPA 70E standard for electrical safety defines Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Categories (CAT 1–4). These categories help employers and workers select the right arc-rated FR and IFR garments based on the level of arc flash risk.
NFPA 70E PPE Categories (CAT) are determined by the arc rating of clothing, measured in calories per square centimeter (cal/cm²). The higher the CAT level, the greater the protection required.
CAT 1 – Minimum arc rating: 4 cal/cm²
CAT 2 – Minimum arc rating: 8 cal/cm²
CAT 3 – Minimum arc rating: 25 cal/cm²
CAT 4 – Minimum arc rating: 40 cal/cm²
These categories ensure that workers wear garments appropriate for the electrical energy they might be exposed to.
Both FR garments (treated fabrics) and IFR garments (inherently flame-resistant fabrics) can be used for NFPA 70E compliance if they meet ASTM F1506 arc flash test requirements.
FR Garments: Affordable and effective, but protection can diminish over time if not maintained properly.
IFR Garments: Built from inherently flame-resistant fibers, ensuring permanent protection that will not wash out—ideal for long-term safety.
When selecting PPE for electrical hazards:
1. Identify the Arc Flash Hazard – Conduct an arc flash risk assessment.
2. Match PPE to CAT Level – Choose FR or IFR garments with the correct arc rating.
3. Prioritize Comfort – Workers are more likely to wear PPE consistently if it's lightweight and breathable.
