DOMEX Safety | June 08, 2026

In a significant move to enhance worker safety, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) has officially ratified new safety protocols for its member utilities across the United States. Effective June 2026, these protocols mandate a comprehensive upgrade of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) inventories to meet the latest ASTM F18 and NFPA 70E standards.
The updated agreement specifically requires all field engineers and linemen to be equipped with Arc-Rated (AR) clothing systems offering a minimum protection level of 8 cal/cm². This supersedes previous general Flame Resistant (FR) requirements, ensuring specific protection against arc flash hazards prevalent in modern grid infrastructure.
This decision affects over 900 cooperative utilities and nearly 42 million consumers. It signals a global shift where electrical safety is prioritized beyond basic fire resistance, emphasizing the need for certified, high-performance gear in critical infrastructure sectors.
